The Cambridge Wastewater Treatment Plant in New Zealand is undergoing a significant upgrade to support a growing population and meet increasingly stringent environmental standards. SPIRAC has supplied the complete inlet works package together with a sliding frame sludge silo, and all equipment has now been delivered to site—looking excellent in position.
The inlet works package consists of three FINEGUARD™ coarse screens, three BANDGUARD™ fine screens, two SPIROWASH® SW‑Q365 screenings washers with launders, one SPIROSEP® Grit Vortex, and one SANDSEP® Grit Classifier. For screenings and grit storage, SPIRAC supplied two SPIROTAINER® units, and a sludge silo fitted with a sliding frame system has been installed for sludge storage.
The inlet works (headworks) equipment has been designed to efficiently separate and process screenings and grit. Screenings are washed, compacted, and dewatered to improve hygiene and reduce disposal volumes, while grit is removed and classified to protect downstream processes. The sliding frame sludge silo supports controlled discharge, effective use of space, and simple, low‑maintenance operation.
The upgraded facility will service Cambridge, Hautapu, and the Karāpiro Domain. Treated effluent will be discharged into the Waikato River via a new outfall. The design has been developed in partnership with local iwi, incorporating kaitiakitanga principles to reflect cultural and environmental stewardship. A dedicated solar farm will provide renewable energy to power operations during daylight hours, reducing the plant’s carbon footprint and long‑term operating costs.
