Cambridge Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Powers Ahead with SPIRAC Technology to Meet Future Demands

The Cambridge Wastewater Treatment Plant in New Zealand is undergoing a major upgrade to meet the needs of a growing population and stricter environmental standards. The new facility will feature advanced treatment technologies and modern solids handling systems, with completion expected in late 2026. The construction of the new Cambridge Wastewater Treatment Plant is progressing smoothly and remains on track, with key milestones achieved in recent months. We’re committed to meeting the highest possible standards when it comes to wastewater treatment. The new Cambridge plant will treat wastewater to a standard that is comparable to the best treatment plants in New Zealand.

SPIRAC was selected to supply and commission a range of equipment to built the inlet works and the sludge handling systems, supporting the plant’s operational efficiency and environmental goals.

Installed Equipment Includes:

  • 3 × FINEGUARD™ Fine Screens (6 mm perforation)
Robust fine screening units designed to remove smaller debris and protect downstream processes. The 6 mm perforation ensures effective capture of fine solids while maintaining flow capacity.

  • 3 × BANDGUARD™ Centre Flow Band Screens (2 mm perforation)
High-efficiency band screens with 2 mm openings for superior solids removal. Ideal for high-flow inlet works requiring fine screening and low maintenance.

  • 1 × SPIROWASH® Washer Compactor
Washes, compacts, and dewaters screenings to reduce volume and improve hygiene.

  • 1 × SANDSEP® Grit Classifier
Separates and dewaters grit to reduce wear on downstream equipment and improve plant performance.

  • 2 × SPIROTAINER® Units
Enclosed, auto-filling containers for screenings and sludge. Designed for hygienic, low-maintenance transport and storage.

System Integration

  • The inlet works are designed to efficiently separate and process solids before biological treatment.
  • Sludge is stored and managed using a Sliding Frame system, ensuring controlled discharge and optimized space usage.

Project Highlights

  • Serves Cambridge, Hautapu, and Karāpiro Domain.
  • Treated effluent will be discharged into the Waikato River via a new outfall.
  • Includes a solar farm to power operations during daylight hours.

SPIRAC’s equipment plays a key role in delivering a reliable, sustainable, and future-ready wastewater solution for the Waipā District.
