Food Waste Receival and Handling, Västerås, Sweden

APPLICATION DETAILS

VafabMiljö Kommunalförbund has upgraded its biogas facility at the Västerås waste site to boost biogas production. The plant primarily processes source-separated food waste collected from the surrounding region. Additional feedstock includes floating substrates such as sludge from grease-removal tanks and packaged food products.

As part of the upgrade, the facility was equipped with two in-ground receiving hoppers, shaftless spiral conveyor systems, and machinery for pre-processing food waste and packaged goods. Food waste is delivered to the site via garbage trucks, containers, and front loaders.

THE SOLUTION

SPIRAC was commissioned to design and manufacture two in-ground receiving hoppers integrated with shaftless spiral conveyor systems. The design prioritizes accessibility to ensure efficient service, supervision, and maintenance. All critical components are reachable from the floor or service level, simplifying routine operations.

The hoppers are sealed to prevent liquid waste leakage and are robust enough to handle frozen food waste. Each hopper is directly connected to the biogas facility, streamlining the waste intake process and supporting the plant’s enhanced production capabilities.
